vCSA SSH issues

Here is my scenario:

I am running vCSA 6 and want to update it to 6 U1.  So far it hasn't worked

  • SSH is enabled (obviously) and root SSH has been allowed.
  • I have added additional accounts to the sudoers file to allow them to SU
  • I cannot SSH to the vCSA as root.  No known password will work.
  • I can SSH in as other users without issue.
  • I can log into the web interface and perform any and all functions.
  • If I reboot the vCSA and break logon to get a console I can log in as root just fine, I even changed the root password just to be sure.
  • When I SSH in as any another user, say as "administrator" it works fine until I attempt to SU.
  • When I try to SU or SUDO no known password works and the account gets locked.

I know all the passwords, have changed most of them just to be sure, and still I cannot SU to run the U1 update installer.  I even went so far as to install a parallel instance of the 6.0 U1 vCSA to play with.  On THAT one I have no issues at all SSHing as root, or using SU or SUDO from other accounts.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?  I would like to upgrade the existing install to U1 but at the rate I'm going I may just install U1 fresh and move everything over.

Thanks

Ken Mazie
