So I spoke to someone at VMware about upgrading this and they gave me the follow instructions: (We currently have two sites in multisite mode Test - Site B/Live - Site A (Primary SSO)

  1. 1.Deploy a new VM with Windows Server Operating system which is supported for 6.0 U1 deployment which should meet all the pre-requisites.

    2. Once the windows machine is deployed attach the 6.0 vCenter for windows .iso to it and follow the steps and deploy External PSC.

Note:Please make sure fqdn name should be resolved properly.

    3. Once the PSC is deployed, break the linked mode of your 5.5 vCenter.

4.Take snapshot of both the machines along with the data-bases.

    5.On Test vCenter machine,Uninstall SSO service .

6.Attach the same .iso which was used earlier for PSC deployment on this server and start upgrading the vCenter. When it comes to SSO,point it to the external PSC which we had deployed earlier.

7.Repeat the same steps on the other node as well.

8.Once both vCenter's are upgraded, they will be pointing to the same PSC.

9.Log into the vSphere web-client and you can see both of these two vC's. Totally you should see 3 nodes under node section.

10.As your infrastructure grows in future you can add one more PSC for better performance.

After starting the upgrade everythign appeared to be going well, we uninstalled SSO and then tried to run the upgrade for 6.1, this failed because there was no longer any SSO installed and the vCenter services couldnt start.

Has anyone done any multi site upgrades? I've read that you may need to upgrade as embedded first and then change the configuration to external, any one done any of these upgrades?
