Can't start Windows 10 VM after upgrading host to El Capitan

Until last week I was successfully running Fusion 7.x with two VMs: Windows XP Pro & Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Windows 8). After upgrading the Mac a few days ago to El Capitan 10.11.1 I found I was no longer able launch my Windows 10 Pro VM--Fusion crashed as soon as I tried to start the VM (although Fusion would still launch my Windows XP Pro VM).

Yesterday I purchased Fusion 8.0.1 & installed it. Same results.

I manually uninstalled Fusion 8.0.1 and re-installed it. Same results. It runs my Windows XP Pro VM fine, but crashes as soon as I try to launch my Windows 10 Pro VM.

I tried "reclaiming disk space" on the Windows 10 VM--no change.

I tried “upgrading the hardware compatibility version” (to version 12); no change.

I'm using a MacBook Air with 8GB RAM, 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7, OS X El Capitan 10.11.1, and Fusion 8.0.1.

Thanks for any suggestions of how I can resolve this (I've also submitted a support request).
