I read on two different blogs, vmware and on a Ubuntu blog, that updating the library path works. I gave it a try and it works just fine.
echo /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so.1 | sudo tee /etc/ld.so.conf.d/LD_LIBRARY_PATH.conf
sudo ldconfig
This is with vmware player 12 and Ubuntu MATE 15.10.
